PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say a Fort Defiance man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife in January on the Navajo Nation.
Federal prosecutors say 53-year-old Lee White was charged in the slaying of 50-year-old Lula White. Sentencing is scheduled for March 1 and prosecutors say White could face up to a life sentence in federal prison.
According to an FBI criminal complaint, White told authorities that he believed his wife had been making phone calls to another man since June 2008.
Authorities say White borrowed a .22-caliber rifle from a friend and confronted his wife on Jan. 2 in the parking lot at her workplace. White got into her car and the couple argued.
White claimed the rifle discharged as he was getting out of the car and it fired twice more as he fumbled with it. Authorities say the victim was fatally shot in the head and chest.
