Ex-health services worker accused of embezzlement

Associated Press - December 9, 2009 5:24 PM ET

PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say a former Southeastern Arizona Behavioral Health Services employee has been accused of embezzling more than $30,000 of the organization's funds.

The charges were filed in Santa Cruz County against 43-year-old Sylvia Nerey of Nogales. She has been charged with one count of fraud, one count of theft and 18 counts of forgery.

Authorities claim Nerey embezzled $30,665 from SEABHS between October 2006 and October 2008 when she was employed in the accounts payable division.

Specific allegations include the forging of 18 SEABHS checks which were either deposited into Nerey's personal accounts or cashed.

The charges came after a joint investigation conducted by the Nogales and Benson police departments and the Arizona Arizona Attorney General's Office. It was not immediately clear Wednesday whether Nerey has hired a lawyer to handle her case.
