FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Flagstaff Unified School District administrators are scheduled to meet Tuesday with the governing board to discuss possibly closing and merging elementary school campuses next year.
Consolidating elementary schools is 1 of the district's strategies to save money in the face of a projected $9 million budget shortfall next year.
Consolidating would also address concerns outlined by the state Auditor General's Office that included uneven enrollment patterns and underutilized buildings highlighted in a 2008 audit.
The district has 12 elementary schools, including a K-8 school in Leupp, about 45 miles northeast of Flagstaff on the Navajo Nation.
The school board is expected to act on a closure plan on Dec. 8, and finalize it on Feb. 8.
