A fire in the laundry room at a local apartment complex was set intentionally, Tucson Fire Department spokesman Darin Wallentine said Sunday morning.
Wallentine said Tucson police officers spotted the blaze in the laundry room of the Vista Montana apartments at 734 E. Roger Road at 4:30 a.m. and called the fire department at 4:35.
No one was hurt in the blaze. The laundry room sitting area, where the fire was started, was not occupied, he said. It contained chairs and bookshelves. Damage to the structure is estimated at $50,000.
Wallentine said firefighters arrived at the complex four minutes after they got the call and the fire was out at 4:51.
He said he could not reveal how the fire was started, but said that it was lit in the laundry room area.
Apartment dwellers were not evacuated because the laundry room is not adjacent to apartments and no one was in danger, Wallentine said. The investigation into the incident is continuing. No suspects were in custody late Sunday morning.
