13 of the 17 firefighters signed a letter to the board stating, they have "no confidence" in their Fire Chief, Tom Nix. It lists several allegations against Nix... including possible embezzlement. Captain Brian Lassen says this information comes from an anonymous tip, "We know there was a letter delivered to Tom Nix, and the fire board, and we know that the letter stated that if nothing was done that it would be turned into the county attorney's office."
There were also questions about his education, Lassen, "His degree was bought on line by a non-accredited organization." Reporter asks, "is that a fact?" Lassen, "it's a fact." Reporter, "how do we know that?" Lassen, "he told me."
Lassen tells me a four-year degree is required to be fire chief, and everyone must have a firefighter 1 and 2 certification to even become a firefighter in Arizona.
There are 7 questions firefighters have asked the board to address. They also include staffing problems, budget issues, and tax concerns. We brought these issues up with board member Luis Castaneda , who sent me this statement... "I am troubled, but not surprised of the statements brought forth from our staff. I truly agree with their assessment of lack of leadership."
We also contacted Tom Nix about the allegations... he insisted all the claims are false.
