Phoenix Mormon temple gets tentative approval

Associated Press - November 12, 2009 11:44 AM ET

PHOENIX (AP) - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a step closer to getting a temple built in northwest Phoenix, despite opposition from some neighbors.

The city Planning Commission recommended Tuesday the City Council approve the temple near 51st Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road.

Members of the Saddleback Homeowners Association say they will appeal the commission's decision. Homeowners oppose the planned 40-foot-tall temple and its 78-foot steeple and lit spire, claiming it will bring more traffic and obstruct their mountain views.

The Phoenix City Council is scheduled to hear the case Dec. 2.

The church's zoning attorney Paul Gilbert said they were pleased with the unanimous vote from the planning commission.
