Fire jumped to Fort Huachuca property

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- At approximately 1:30 p.m. today, Fort Huachuca's fire department responded to a fire on the median of Buffalo Soldier Trail across from Gas City and Avenida Cochise.

The fire appears to have been started by lawn mowers mowing the western median of BST off post and came across the installation boundary.

The fire is now fully contained but will have to be monitored throughout the night because there is a concrete lined water basin located where the fire occurred that has wood chips around its edges to prevent erosion. The wood chips are smoldering and fire fighters want to ensure they are completely extinguished.

Approximately eight acres were burned. The U.S. Forest Service, Huachuca City, Whetstone, and Fry Fire Departments also responded.

Sierra Vista Fire Department monitored the roadway median and fence line. BST was closed for about 30 minutes due to smoke and the fires proximity to the road.
