UA doctor elected as member of prestigious Institute of Medicine

TUCSON, Ariz. - Another University of Arizona College of Medicine professor has been elected as a member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

Setsuko K. Chambers, MD, who is a professor and vice chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and also the section head of Gynecologic Oncology at the university, has received this prominent honor.

Dr. Chambers joins a small faction of obstetricians and gynecologists throughout the nation who have received this admiration. Being a member of the Institute is considered to be one of the nation's highest honors in the field of medicine, as it recognizes those individuals who have a commitment to service and demonstrate remarkable professional achievement. The Institute's total active membership is 1,610 individuals. This also includes 93 foreign associates and 75 emeritus members.

Dean of the UA College of Medicine, Steve Goldschmid, MD, said that he is extremely proud that Dr. Chambers is a member of the faculty at the University of Arizona. "Election to the Institute of Medicine is an outstanding achievement and recognizes the excellence that Dr. Chambers brings to the bedside - treating patients as a gynecologic oncologist - as well as to the laboratory bench with her important research into how we can try to control women's cancers from spreading," Goldschmid said.

Dr. Chambers, who was recruited from Yale in 2004, shares an expertise in a broad spectrum of areas including prevention, diagnosis, screening, surgery and chemotherapy. She also has a large clinical practice is which she carries out all these activities.

The extent of her skills, her advocacy for her programs and causes, and her aspiration for excellence in the medical field make Dr. Chambers a nationally recognized IOM member and academic leader.

Dr. Chambers is among a few other UA faculty members who are IOM members which include: J. Lyle Bootman, PhD, ScD, dean of the College of Pharmacy; Peter Rosen, MD, clinical professor, Department of Emergency Medicine; and M. Paul Capp, MD, professor emeritus.
