Man gets prison term in Navajo Nation assault case

Associated Press - August 24, 2009 6:14 PM ET

PHOENIX (AP) - A Winslow man has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for assaulting a 67-year-old woman last August in Dilkon on the Navajo Nation.

Prosecutors say 27-year-old Jarvis Jay Dixson pleaded guilty in March to assault resulting in serious bodily injury and was sentenced Monday to 41 months in prison.

They say Dixson was involved in a domestic dispute on Aug. 19, 2008, with his girlfriend, who also is the mother of his child.

She was holding the baby at the time of the assault until the woman took the child from the mother.

Authorities say Dixson then turned on the victim and hit her in the face so hard that she was knocked unconscious and suffered multiple facial fractures.

The victim's identity was not released and authorities also would not disclose her relationship to Dixson's girlfriend in order to protect her privacy.
