Smaller shooting range planned for Flagstaff-area

Associated Press - August 6, 2009 1:14 PM ET

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Plans for a shooting range near Flagstaff are changing. State Game and Fish is now looking at establishing a shooting range to the east or the north of Winona.

The agency was looking at plans for a 300 to 600 acre shooting range northwest of Munds Park south of Flagstaff.

The Winona sites would be 60 to 80 acres and would be a 30 minute drive from Flagstaff.

Neither Winona shooting range site would have camping areas, and each would hold fewer people than the shooting range previously proposed near Munds Park.

Game and Fish Habitat Branch Chief Josh Avey along with others weighed the pros and cons of 23 locations, including Camp Navajo and sites near Meteor Crater, Schnebly Hill and Hopi lands southeast of Flagstaff.
