Tucson's newest red light camera on southside
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The fourth location was the charm for city leaders. According to the Tucson Police Department, trhe city's newest red light camera will be installed at the intersection of 6th Avenue and Ajo Way.
The location wasn't the city's first choice. TPD originally wanted to put the camera at Golflinks and Swan, but right of way questions with Davis-Monthan Air Force Base forced leaders to scrap those plans.
Then the city wanted the camera at Oracle and Grant, but the Grant Road widening project killed that idea. Construction also ruined plans to be the camera at 22nd and Kino Parkway.
The new camera is expected to be installed by October 1. There will be a practice period when the camera goes on line. During that time the cameras will catch speeders and red light runners but will not ticket drivers.
When the camera goes online, it will be the eighth red light camera within city limits. Pima County has two new cameras on the way. They are at Tanque Verde west of Houghton and La Cholla south of River.
