PHOENIX (AP) - A federal grand jury has indicted a Navajo nation man on charges of first degree murder of a Navajo Nation police sergeant.

Prosecutors say 42 year-old Victor Bigman was also indicted by the jury on one count of use of a firearm in a crime of violence.

On June 25th, Sgt. Darrell Curley and another officer were called to Bigman's home for a report of Bigman's sons drinking and fighting.

Authorities say that Bigman shot Curley four times as he tried to arrest one of his sons. Sgt. Curley fired back, wounding Bigman who remains in a hospital in federal custody.

Hearings for the case are on hold, pending an mental competency evaluation for Bigman.
