PHOENIX (AP) - Maricopa County elections officials are certifying that opponents of Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce collected enough voter signatures to force a recall election.
County Elections Director Karen Osborne presented the1,202-page certification package to the state elections director Friday.
Osborne says her office is certifying that the petitions have 10,365 valid signatures of voters from the Mesa Republican's legislative district.
The certification itself just refers to the number of valid signatures, not the state-set requirement for 7,756 valid signatures.
The secretary of state now must make its own verification. It would then notify Pearce that he can either resign or face a recall election.
Pearce has said he won't resign. It would be up to Gov. Jan Brewer to formally call for the election
